Files not listed Alphabetically by default, only by manually sorting?

there a way to sort files in WIN EXPLORER, by SIZE AND BY TYPE at the same time? For example, I want all the files to be arranged in BROUPS, by it's file TYPE....(ie all ZIP files, MEDIA files, etc...)....but within each GROUP, I want it arranged by SIZE.....as well... Can this actually be done?

I want to be able to sort by file extension. In Windows Explorer, I have .log files that show the "Type" to be "Text Document". So when I sort by "Type", it sorts the .log and .txt files together. In XP the subfolders are left at the top in an ascending sort, but fall to the bottom

How does Windows Xp sort files?
That way you dont have to use backup software just use File, Save As. and then make sure you revert to your main file before you do more work. This has only happened recently - files used to be sorted by name as a default (even when viewed in "list" mode). Any help restoring the default sort order would be appreciated. This does not happen when I explore directories using Windows Explorer - explorer remembers the sort order without any problem.

Still running a few DOS applications under Windows 98. Do you know of any tool/utility that can be used to sort files in a directory from a DOS prompt. Using Windows Explorer only sorts the view in the explorer, not in the actual directory you can view from the DOS prompt.
